Crossing Rubicon

Stalks

In somber reflection, I remembered parts of my life
When brash trumpets sounded chapters of strife.
Passions ignited, scorched conquests of grandeurs
Triumphant companions, some hitchhiking voyeurs
Success is a magnet for men seeking fame.

Tributes to rivals, felled by the way
Each sought bright glory, and then slipped in the fray.

In courtyards of conflict, serious injuries sustained
Measurements of manhood, enduring rivalries proclaimed.
Forces met in battle, steel wills on display
Single victories around me, desperate times yet to pay
Some matches ended, but other just begun.

Songs sung by warriors in the firelight
Chansons of conquests declared in the night.

Times filled with passion of a life gone by
Battles fought in anger, I rarely bothered why.
Friendships lost at life’s expense, simple conflict exposure.
I mourn the loss of time gone by, now I’ve time for closure
Lay me down with those that are gone, our battles are over.
